Asociación de Permacultura de las Islas Pitiusas (APIP)

Permaculture is how we design beautiful, resilient gardens, while also supporting the Permaculture Association of the Pityusic Islands on Ibiza.

Asociación de Permacultura de las Islas Pitiusas (APIP) is an open, community-based NGO that has been active since 2005. From their five-hectare finca in the northeast of Ibiza they explore permaculture, regenerative agriculture, water management and agroforestry as tools to care for the land, people and the fair sharing of resources.

In 2023 they launched Comando Agroforestal and their first Centre for Training, Research and Demonstration in successional agroforestry and syntropic agriculture, adapted specifically to our Mediterranean climate. We see this living laboratory as one of the most promising examples of regenerative land use on the island, and are proud to support it.

Spotlight : Roberto García

He is an active member of the Permaculture Association of the Pitiusas Islands (A.P.I.P), where he works to promote regenerative agriculture, water management, natural building and community-based sustainability across Ibiza and Formentera. Through his involvement in key local projects, trainings and collaborations, he contributes to strengthening ecological resilience and the spread of permaculture principles.

He is the coordinator of the Permaculture Association of the Pitiusas Islands (A.P.I.P), a platform promoting regenerative agriculture, natural building, water stewardship and community resilience across Ibiza and Formentera. Guided by the ethics of caring for the earth, caring for people, and fair resource sharing, the association strengthens sustainable living through courses, projects and local collaborations. Gardens of Ibiza proudly supports this mission.

explain

What is syntropic agroforestry?

Syntropic agroforestry is a way of farming that imitates how a young forest grows. Trees, shrubs and annual crops are planted in layers and managed with regular pruning, so they constantly create shade, organic matter and fertility in the soil.

Instead of fighting weeds, insects or “messy” growth, syntropic systems use that energy to build a richer ecosystem: more life in the soil, better water retention and a cooler microclimate. For dry Mediterranean islands like Ibiza, it is a promising way to produce food while restoring the land at the same time.

Our contribution

How we support

explained

What is Permaculture for us

Permaculture is more than a gardening method; it’s a way of designing gardens that copy the logic of healthy ecosystems. The aim is to create places that are productive, resilient and able to regenerate over time.

In nature, no one waters, fertilises or weeds, and yet a forest thrives. Permaculture asks: what can we learn from this? By following nature’s patterns, we design gardens that stay beautiful without exhausting the land.

Typical forms include:

  • Food forests; layered plantings with trees, shrubs, herbs and groundcovers working together.
  • Soil building; biochar, mulch and organic matter that improve fertility and water retention.
  • Water-wise design; rainwater harvesting and smart planting to make gardens more drought-resilient.

we support by contributing

A dedicated classroom designed to strengthen their educational work in regenerative agriculture and agroforestry

This new space will allow APIP to offer trainings, workshops and community gatherings regardless of weather conditions, helping extend their educational programme throughout the entire year. By supporting the infrastructure that strengthens their mission, we help APIP create a protected, welcoming environment where regenerative agriculture, agroforestry and community knowledge can continue to grow. Our contribution enables them to scale their impact, train more people, and cultivate a stronger, more resilient future for Ibiza’s landscapes and communities.

Introducing

a Permaculture Garden

The vegetable garden, food forest and herb garden are all created using sintropic principles: diversity, natural succession and soil regeneration. The food forest grows in layered guilds, the veg garden in dynamic rows, and the herb garden in companion groupings. Together they form a resilient, self-sustaining ecosystem that thrives year-round.

Let’s grow something that lasts

Design a garden that’s good for you and for Ibiza. By working with us, you support the Permaculture Association of the Pityusic Islands and help grow the regenerative movement on the island.
