Siesta

A luxury villa connected with permaculture

Nestled in the hills of Siesta, Ibiza, a beautifully designed garden surrounds a casita, blending sustainability with Mediterranean charm.

Guided by permaculture principles, the space features vibrant bougainvillea at the entrance and a thoughtful mix of fruit trees like lemon, fig, and apricot. Passion fruit vines, mimosa, and falsa pimienta add color, fragrance, and shade. Resilient plants such as ricino, oleander, and eucalyptus ensure year-round vitality. Wisteria drapes the house in purple elegance.

This garden is not just ornamental. It’s a living, self-sustaining ecosystem that reflects harmony with nature, designed to thrive beautifully and responsibly in Ibiza’s landscape.

Client Spotlight: Rutger van Zuidam

“Andrew and his team handled the landscape design and construction of my organic garden, and also arranged the maintenance. Everything ran smoothly and the price-to-quality ratio is excellent. Their maintenance is flexible and of high quality.”

The Garden Plan

This garden surrounds a small casita on gently sloping terrain, with limited sunlight and close neighboring properties. To manage water runoff and support the natural topography, we created subtle terraced levels using local stones and branches, a sustainable, moisture-retaining approach that helps prevent erosion.

Designer Andrew

Over time, Andrew and Rutger forged a close connection. Andrew shared his passion for gardening, his design process, and the joy of creating. Rutger, an entrepreneur, was inspired and offered him the opportunity. The outcome? The results speak for themselves.

Measurements & Design

Planting

The planting palette was chosen for shade tolerance and low water needs. Each plant is selected for its adaptability and visual harmony in shaded, layered garden environments, including Nispero, Lemon, Ricino and Eucalyptus.

Budget

This garden was planned with respect for the natural rhythm of the seasons. Because we allowed time for the plants to grow and establish gradually, we were able to use younger trees and smaller plants, a budget-conscious choice that enabled the garden to mature elegantly over two years.

No heavy machinery was needed, except for a crane truck used to deliver soil to elevated zones, which involved only minimal additional cost.

Timeline

Below is the full timeline of the project, from the first meeting and design phases to the garden construction and the beginning of ongoing maintenance. Explore how we bring vision to life.

The Siesta Garden

The section of the garden surrounds a small casita and sits on a gently sloping terrain with limited sunlight and close neighbours nearby. To manage water runoff and support the natural landscape, we created small terraced levels using local materials like stones and branches, a subtle, sustainable solution that holds moisture and prevents erosion.

Gardeners

This garden is relatively small and low-maintenance. A Junior Gardener visits monthly for approximately two hours to handle essential upkeep.

Each garden we maintain is assigned a dedicated point of contact, an Expert Gardener who oversees all communication and quality. For this garden, that role is fulfilled by Alberto.

Calculations

Water Needed

Water requirements depend on sun exposure, plant type, and season. Sunny zones can demand 20-40% more water than shaded areas. During the first year, gardens need more frequent watering; after that, usage stabilises. Mulching helps reduce evaporation by up to 30% and retain soil moisture. Trees often require 50-200 L/week, while shrubs and perennials need between 3-6 L/plant/week during dry spells. Drip irrigation systems use 5-8 L/m²/week, compared to 8-12 for manual watering.

The optimal planting season is from autumn through spring, giving roots time to establish before summer. The water usage projection for this garden appears on the right. Want to estimate your own garden’s needs? Use our calculator.
